The goal of the New Worker program is to make new workers more readily identifiable on the work site, to ensure adequate training is completed, to prevent injury during their initial months of service, and to ensure that each new worker has a full understanding of BA Blacktop’s safety program.

New workers wear distinctive green hard-hats for the first three months of employment, after which they are given a yellow hard-hat upon successful completion of a written safety knowledge test.

Over a period of 18 months,   workers receive wedge-shaped stickers on completion of training phases. A  total of three stickers are awarded to the employee during the program, forming a complete circle. Completion of the full circle indicates that the employee has demonstrated a strong commitment to personal safety and the safety of fellow employees, and has graduated through the New Worker program, or otherwise has extensive industry experience.

In the unfortunate event that a worker falls ill or becomes injured and is unable to work, we have implemented a Return to Work program to help ease employees back to work when the time is right. It is a temporary measure that is intended to bridge the gap between injury and returning to full duties. By having injured workers return to work gradually, we are able to maintain the safety of the injured worker, while assisting in a more rapid and complete recovery process. The Return to Work Program is beneficial for both employee and employer; by reducing the risk of long-term disability, reducing employee stress levels - as they are able to maintain their income levels and job status within the company, reducing the amount of time having valuable employees away from work as well as any potential training cost for the employer if they are required to train a replacement worker.

In an effort to eliminate or reduce backing accidents, we have implemented a First Move Forward Policy company-wide. Through this policy BA Blacktop seeks to reduce the losses that occur from motor vehicle and equipment backing accidents, including employee injuries, lost work and restricted days, equipment damage, loss of good will, lawsuits and insurance costs. The First Move Forward Policy states that whenever a company vehicle is parked, it should be parked in a manner that upon re-starting the vehicle, "Drive" is the first gear used, not "Reverse". In the event backing is unavoidable, employees are required to use a spotter while backing, especially when towing a trailer.
