What It Is
Milling and profiling of an existing pavement is the act of removing a
portion of the pavement structure with the use of specialized equipment
to provide a milled surface cut at a desired grade. The depth of the cut
into the asphalt structure is determined by the condition of the existing
pavement and the desired finished profile of the roadway being rehabilitated.
Reasons For Use
Milling and profiling is commonly used in pavement maintenance
where there is a need to remove a portion of the existing asphalt pavement
prior to the application of a top lift of surface asphalt.
Curb and gutter elevations often restrict the ultimate elevation of the roadway, and where there is not a need to increase the structural capacity of the road, milling and profiling is a cost–effective alternative to curb reconstruction and tie–in re–profiling.
Milling can also be used to remove ruts created through pavement distress to create a renewed profile and eliminate the danger of water ponding in wheel paths. This is considered a short–term solution to larger problems that exist in the pavement structure.
